UNITED REFORMED CHURCH, GREAT URSWICK

Prior to 1914 the early members of Urswick Church of Christ would hold services in each other homes. In 1914 a plot of land was purchased from Mr Thomas Jackson and shortly afterwards the church you see today was erected. The total purchase and completion of the church building cost £13.19s.4d This was paid on April 22nd 1915.

When the church was built , consideration had to be given to the tradition in the Churches of Christ for baptism by total body immersion. A Baptistry was built and was in regular use until about 45 years ago. It still remains in church under the platform on which the Communion table now stands, but it is now covered with carpeting and has remained unexposed since that time. It is not certain whether it was filled by water from the Tarn or from  another source.

The first body of Trustees for the new Church of Christ were as follows:

Richard Wood, Much Urswick - Butcher

William Edward Wood, Much Urswick - Butcher

Samuel Wood, Sunbrick - Farmer

Joseph Oxley, Much Urswick - Collector of Taxes

Thomas Ashburner - Coachbuilder

Edward Wood, Sunbrick - Evangelist

Richard Tyson, Soutergate, Kirkby in Furness - Butcher

James Robinson, Sandside, Kirkby in Furness - Retired Farmer

Robert Oxley, Broughton Rd, Dalton in Furness - Butcher.

Under the resolution dated 14th July 1981, Urswick Church of Christ decided to become one of the member Churches of the Furness United Reformed Church . This was made up of the following fellowships:
